iN tHE bOOTH ::: CANY McKENZO
CANY McKENZO
From behind the scenes of Botswana`s pop music industry, heading production of some of the most successful albums of the past decade, Keith and Kinn is proud to present Cany McKenzo. Known mostly as a hit maker for other artists, Cany has been silently working on a sugar recipe for his own project, Cotton Candy, released on his own label X3MIX Records. We tracked down the man behind the hits and caught up with him in his well equipped studio.
EARLY YEARS
Cany McKenzo started djing at high school parties in 1996. While studying for BSc at the University of Botswana in 1999, he also deejayed in hostel parties and went on to do his BSc (Hon) Quantity Surveying at Reading University (UK) from 2001. It was then that Cany Mckenzo got the opportunity to work for a Radio Station where he worked as a presenter for a hip-hop show doubling as a club dj and later became part of the commercials production team. By then, his interest in music production had grown bigger and soon enough, Cany enrolled for a part time sound engineering course, juggling his studies with varcity and work.
MUSIC
In 2005 Cany McKenzo met Mr Tagg to form a production team called Ken-Tag-It, which produced albums such as Selemela by Mr Tagg, Skhokho by Mapetla, Mopheme by Jay-R and Maphuthadichaba by Thulie. Having managed to release these 4 albums in less than 6 months Mckenzo took a different approach, and set up his own label. X3MIX Records was born. Cany has since produced hit songs for artists such as Mapetla (Ahh!!), Skazzo (Hoof Hoof , Follow Follow), VEE (Monwana), Exodus (Masupatsela) and Mingo (Tshaba Tsotsi).
.
In 2007 Cany returned to the UK, this time to work towards saving for his dream studio, a 100% Pro-Tools system. Well dreams do come true and Cany now boasts an MPC 5000 the AKAI flagship and the close of 2009 saw him host top South African house producers, Dr Duda and Mono T on special production assignment for Easy B`s Monate Fela album.
COTTON CANDY
Cany`s first love is deejaying, and with the release of his debut album, Cotton Candy, he`s set on a come back to the decks. Crafted in his state of the art studio, Cotton Candy showcases Cany`s production skills and some singing too (Cany sings on two of his songs). From kwaito hit maker to house producer, the focus for 2010 at X3mix is house beats.
The album is undoubtedly dance floor candy with an electro vibe in many of the tracks. Cany has put considerable effort in this album and the result is solid beats and a host of new singing talent on the opening track "Angel of Love" and "Tonight", my favourite track. Another song to look out for is the Setswana love song, "Lorato".
Theres something for everyone on this offering, whether its electro fueled beats, soulful or kasified grunge. This is the beginning of a new journey for McKenzo who intends to bring more candy to dance floors across Botswana and the world.

Masters At Work (MAW)

The History:
"Little Louie" Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez officially started their union as Masters At Work in 1990. Vega, a prodigious DJ around New York, met Gonzalez, a producer, through burgeoning house DJ Todd Terry. Gonzalez’s song "Salsa House" was a favorite of Vega, who fell for its Latin-influenced, everything-goes flavor. Desiring to remix the song, Vega asked Terry for an introduction, and almost instantly the two bonded over their insatiable appetite for music of all kinds.
Vega was born in the Bronx in 1965 and raised in an environment rich with Latin music. His father was an accomplished saxophone player and his uncle was renowned salsa singer Hector Lavoe (of Fania All Stars fame). While Vega embraced the music of his Puerto Rican heritage, it was his pair of club-hopping sisters – regulars at David Mancuso's famous late-'70s Loft parties and at Paradise Garage – who introduced him to the vitality of dance music. Already taken with roller-disco and hip-hop, Vega attended Paradise Garage for the first time in 1980. There he witnessed the magic of DJ Larry Levan, whose ability to blend music from seemingly every genre and era into a seamless groove would foreshadow the spirit of Masters At Work. Through the mid-'80s, Vega began to make a name for himself as an up-and-coming DJ, playing house and freestyle in Bronx and Manhattan hotspots like Devil's Nest, Roseland and Studio 54. He was also doing remixes and original rhythm tracks, including one of his early breaks remixing Information Society's "Running" for Tommy Boy.
Gonzalez was born in Brooklyn in 1970. As a kid, he initially shunned Latin music, falling in love with the rebellious party beats of hip-hop. He worked as a buyer in a local record store while a teenager, mastering his skills as a DJ playing on the side. In the late-'80s, Gonzalez and a friend began organizing popular neighborhood block parties under the guise Masters At Work. Gonzalez met Todd Terry through these parties and lent Terry the fresh MAW moniker for two eventual club hits – "Alright, Alright" and "Dum Dum Cry." In return, Terry let Gonzalez borrow his drum machine and recording equipment, on which the blossoming producer recorded several tracks for the influential Nu Groove Records, including "Salsa House."
The MAW Union
The first collaboration between Vega and Gonzalez came in 1990 when Vega produced the debut album for singer Marc Anthony, an underground club prodigy at the time. Writing with India and other collaborators, and arranging the album himself, Vega brought in Latin masters Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri to record the album, and turned to Gonzalez for some beats. Credited as "Masters At Work featuring Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri," the recording of the album set the conceptual framework for future MAW productions: combining live instruments with sampled beats, and veteran masters with new innovators. Soon others were seeking the MAW sound, and Vega and Gonzalez began remixing artists ranging from Debbie Gibson to Saint Etienne. They also began making their own original tracks, like "Blood Vibes," a hip-hop/reggae blend that marked their first original production, and "Our Mute Horn," a Miles Davis tribute track that gave a nod to their jazz influences.
As the Masters At Work sound became more pervasive in clubs, they became more sought after by artists and labels, eventually remixing Bjork, Deee-Lite, Neneh Cherry, Soul II Soul, Donna Summer, Janet Jackson, Daft Punk, Incognito, Brand New Heavies, Stephanie Mills and many, many more. Sometimes a MAW remix is literally a re-mixing of the original, like adding a bass line and some minimal keys (Daft Punk's "Around the World") Other times, their remixes are total re-imaginations of the songs, as was the case with Saint Etienne's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart".
MAW also began producing for their own coterie of artists, like Barbara Tucker and salsa singer India, as well as for artists like Luther Vandross, BeBe Winans and George Benson. These were artists who had no foothold in the dance world but, based on their collaborations with MAW, were given instant respect. In addition to their own solo departures – e.g., Gonzalez’s hip-hop influenced guise The Bucketheads and Vega's DJ residencies at Sound Factory Bar – the group collected some of their own original tracks and released The Album in 1993. Alternating between hard, head-nodding hip-hop and more inspired house tracks, it was their first album released under the Masters At Work name.
Nuyorican Soul
MAW alter-ego Nuyorican Soul was born in 1993, a play on their heritage (Puerto Rican), residence (New York City) and style of music (soul). They debuted the guise on "The Nervous Track" (Nervous Records), giving us a glimpse of the Nuyorican concept – a groove that wasn't just thumping beats but musically sophisticated and engaging as well. A subsequent track, the hot club hit "You Can Do It (Baby)!" featuring George Benson, helped the project gain critical mass with fans, and after being signed by influential music maestro Gilles Peterson, Vega and Gonzalez recorded the first Nuyorican Soul album.
Released in 1997, the self-titled album was a mix of exemplary salsa, jazz and soul musicians (Roy Ayers, Eddie Palmieri, Jocelyn Brown). There was a discernable Latin jazz influence on songs like "Runaway" (a Salsoul Orchestra cover), a classic soul feel on the Rotary Connection gem "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun," and a nod to hip-hop with a cover of Bob James' oft-sampled classic "Nautilus (Mawtilus)". Yet while the album's cover songs gave a nod to their influences, nobody could have imagined the timelessness of the Nuyorican sound.

Osunlade

“For me, everything is an instrument, it all has sound. So in my eyes, I play every instrument, or at least I can create sound from anything. I think that’s the beauty of music. It’s not only about talent, it’s about perspective and the knowledge of how to create something from nothing and vice versa.” ~OSUNLADE, President, Yoruba Records
Respected and emulated New York-based producer, DJ, and label chief Osunlade grew up in a musical environment; as a youngster, he took piano lessons and sang in his church choir. At the age of 17, he joined the cast of the popular children's show Sesame Street as a presenter. He later produced music for the program. During the late '80s, he started working as a producer and session hand; since starting out, he has leant his talents to records by Musiq, Patti LaBelle, Najee, India.Arie, and Eric Benet. In 1999, Osunlade established the Yoruba label and began releasing deep house productions of his own while cultivating new artists. For his first album, 2001's Paradigm, the producer hooked up with the U.K.'s Soul Jazz label, which released the excellent LP and increased his profile significantly as a result. Easily one of the most gifted producers of soul/funk-influenced deep house, Osunlade -- an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa -- graces everything he touches with spiritual, uplifting vibes.

From the walls of his bedroom, driven by passion, Spinz has since come out to bring pleasure to masses of Kuala Lumpur and Gaborone with his soul stirring and body provoking beats. Spinz discovered his love for music at the age of 10 with childhood friends and collected music from the likes of U.M.M, Cece Peniston, BlackBox, Crystal Waters, C+ C Music Factory and many others under the moniker PitBull Boogie Productions playing afternoon house parties for their peers. The crew disbanded but the passion for dance music stayed with Spinz and eight years later a childhood dream was be realized when he moved from Botswana to Malaysia to pursue a degree in Mass Communications. Armed with only a few pieces of vinyl, he began practicing and perfecting his mixing and building up confidence on the decks. It was after a few stints at a few clubs around Kuala Lumpur that Spinz was unleashed to the public through a residency a small after party lounge called 'The Tube'. Soon after, word of his excellent music spread around the city turning 'The Tube' into a first choice for the after party crowd. He then moved on to form a partnership with one the citys most talented DJs (Joey G) in an events management company called Stealth Concepts which produced unforgettable events such as 'Lords of the Underground' and 'Ambience du Jour' working with the best djs in Malaysia. He also worked on an event called 'Harmony' with DJ Yansi (1945Music Factory) and DJ Hazriq(Obsession Events) which feature indonesia's godfather of house, DJ Romy. Having worked his way through the circuit in Kuala Lumpur, DJ Spinz gained the love and respect of Kuala Lumpurs elite DJs. He hooked up with world class producer Haze (responsible for the dance anthems 'Changes' & 'Freak') in October 2003 to lend his writing and emceeing skills to form an experimental hip hop group called HAZE UNIVERSITY. In November 2004 he was chosen as one of the judges for the Vestax Extravaganza DJ Competition which saw the finalist travelling to Japan to compete against contestants from all over the world. In Botswana he has shared the decks with top djs such as DJ Fresh(Big Dawg Productions), DJ Christos (Katsaisis Music, S.A), DJ Claude (Soulcandi, S.A), Mbuso (Phezulu Records) and Fistaz Mixwell to name a few. He is now a member of the hottest dj crew in Gaborone, 'House Junkies' and is frontman for his upcoming brand 'Afro Kandi'. Bent on world domination through grooves, DJ Spinz's selection ranges from deep soul massaging to high energy tech- house with influences from dj/ producers such as Haze, Masters at Work, Joey Youngman, Jay J, Chris Lum, Fred Everything, Marc Romboy, to name a few. Ever keeping the dancefloor lively, a party aint a party without DJ Spinz!!
